Remembering Kurt Cobain

Kurt Donald Cobain was born February 20, 1967 in Grays Harbor Hospital in Aberdeen, Washington. Cobain came from a musical family. His maternal uncle, Chuck Fradenburg, played the flugelhorn; his aunt, Mimi, played guitar and performed in bands throughout Grays Harbor County; and his great-uncle, Norbert, had a career as a spoon player.

Kurt was described as being a happy and excitable child, who also exhibited sensitivity and care. His talent as an artist was evident from an early age. He was often in trouble at school for his obscene drawings of Ronald Reagan.

Nevermind

Nirvana! ‘Nevermind’ was released September 24, 1991. The album became a huge unexpected breakout smash and soared to number one on the charts. ‘Nevermind’ ushered in the grunge movement, and Kurt Cobain was silently elected as the spokesperson of a generation. ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ was their rallying cry.

Cobain was plagued by poor health, drug abuse and depression. The Cobain’s had a family history of suicide, mental illness and alcoholism, two uncles had committed suicide with guns. Kurt died on April 5, 1994. Another casualty of Rock n Roll. Kurt passed away way too young and is a member of the 27 club. He is sorely missed.

There are a lot of conspiracy theories surrounding Kurt’s death. One reporter alleges that during an interview with Kurt Cobain the day before he died, “Courtney Love enters the room drops off a a shotgun, a box of shells and a handful of drugs. She then squats and takes a dump on the carpet while looking directly in my eyes.” We will never know the truth.
