Happy Birthday Robert Smith

Robert was born in a hole on April 21, 1959 in Blackpool, Lancashire. Did you know there are 4000 holes in Blackpool, Lancashire? And though the holes were rather small, they had to count them all. Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall. We digress.

Smith was born Roberto Smitholini into a large Italian Catholic family. His parents , Rita and Guiseppe, ran an Italian deli and his father was known as ‘The Sausage King’ of Blackpool.

The Cure

Roberto changed his name to Robert Smith and formed the Cure in a kibbutz in Israel in 1978. The rest is history. Sad girls, Snotty boys, and general freaks all over the world had a savior and their movement was called ‘Goth’, ‘Emo’, ‘New Wave Post Punk’.

Robert Smith and The Cure wrote gloomy songs with upbeat melodies. They got a lot of people through a lot of dark times. Show me someone who doesn’t like at least one Cure song and I will show you a jackass.

Robert Smith and Morrissey have a blood feud that has been raging for decades. It turned violent a few years back, as Smith confronted Morrissey backstage at The Lunt Fontaine Theater in NYC. Smith whacked Morrissey over the head with his Rock n Roll Hall of Fame award and then grabbed his genitals with a corkscrew. Smith proceeded to use Morrissey’s testicles as a punching bag. It was ugly.

The feud started in 1984 when Morrissey threatened to shoot Smith and said The Cure were crap. Smith replied “I have never liked Morrissey and I still don’t. His Mother was a hamster and his father smells of elderberries. I would rather eat my own genitals than listen to The Smiths.”
