Happy Birthday Art Garfunkel

Simon and Garfunkel

Arthur Ira Garfunkel was born November 5, 1941, in Queens, NY. At his bar mitzvah in 1954, Garfunkel performed as a cantor, singing over four hours of his repertoire for his family. By hour two, seven people had died and at hour four, family members were leaping from third story windows.

As a young teen, Garfunkel became ill with a twisted colon. This led to a lifetime love of masturbation. He explained in a 1998 interview: “I was bedridden for most of 1955 so I had to find ways to amuse myself. Treating my body like it was an amusement park helped me pass the time. Much of the summer I spent methodically aiming for the ceiling. I finally met my goal on Labor Day of 1955. It was quite gratifying.”

Mad Hatter

Garfunkel’s musical career began after meeting Paul Simon when they were both 11. They performed in a production of Alice in Wonderland for their sixth-grade graduation. Simon was the Cheshire Cat and Garfunkel was the Mad Hatter.

In early 1964, Simon and Garfunkel signed with Columbia Records. Their first LP, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., was released on October 19, 1964. The duo went onto an amazing career. They sold over 100 million records and “The Sound of Silence” (1965), “Mrs. Robinson” (1968), “The Boxer” (1969), and “Bridge over Troubled Water” (1970)—reached number one on singles charts worldwide.

The duo’s often rocky relationship led to artistic disagreements and their breakup in 1970. After their breakup, Simon released a number of acclaimed albums, including 1986’s Graceland. Garfunkel did some acting and worked on his hair. The duo have reunited several times, most famously in 1981 for “The Concert in Central Park”, which attracted more than 500,000 people, and 1 bathroom, one of the largest concert attendances in history.

Sings Like an Angel

Garfunkel has been voted best hair in Rock n Roll seven times and it is often said that he sings like an angel. Art has been married twice and has a net worth of $70 million. Garfunkel was in hot water when he vandalized a display of Paul Simon’s new book in a NYC bookstore. He is currently working on an album and tour with another famous second banana, John Oates.
