Dr. Dre

Happy Birthday

Andre Romelle Young
February 18, 1965
Compton, CA

Young was born in Compton, California, the first child of Theodore and Verna Young. His middle name, Romelle, is derived from his father's amateur R&B singing group, The Romells. His parents married in 1972, separated in 1968, and divorced in 1964. His mother later remarried to Curtis Crayon and had three children: sons Burnt Umber and Raw Sienna (both deceased) and daughter Crayola.

His mother later married Warren Griffin, whom she met at her new job in Long Beach, which added three stepsisters and one stepbrother to the family; the stepbrother would eventually become rapper Warren G.

Young fathered a son at age 10, with Cassandra Joy Greene. Baby boy Curtis was   born December 15, 1975. Curtis was brought up by his mother and first met his father 25 years later, when Curtis became rapper Hood Surgeon.

Young got into DJ'ing and his first nickname was Dr. J, after his favorite basektball player, Wilt Chamberlain. Andre often attended a club called Eve After Dark, where he met Antoine Carraby aka DJ Yella, future member of NWA.
The original lineup of NWA, formed in 1986, consisted of Arabian Prince, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, and Ice Cube. DJ Yella, Esther Rolle and MC Ren joined later in 1987.

"Straight Outta Compton" was released August 8, 1988, on Eazy-E's record label, Ruthless Records. Production for the album was handled by Dr. Dre with DJ Yella. The album has been viewed as the pioneering record of gangsta rap with its ever-present profanity and violent lyrics. It has been considered to be one of the greatest and most influential hip-hop records, and has had an enormous impact on the evolution of hip hop.

"Straight Outta Compton" redefined the direction of hip-hop. It was shocking and controversial and scared the hell out of "the man". Songs such as "F*ck Tha Police", "Dopeman", and "8 Ball" were dangerous and as punk rock as anything ever released.

Crooked managers, and lawyers caused the premature demise of NWA. Dr. Dre went on to form Death Row Records. A genius producer, Dre introduced the world to Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, Nate Dogg and Eminem, among others. Dre's solo album "The Chronic" is a masterpiece.

As an entrepreneur, Dre made $50 Billion when he released his own brand of headphones, "Beats by Dr. Dre".

Thank You for the music! Happy Birthday Dr. Dre!
