Tommy Ramone

Happy Birthday

Thomas Erdelyi
January 29, 1949
Budapest, Hungary

We take time to remember Tommy Ramone on his birthday. Erdelyi better known as Tommy Ramone, was a record producer, musician, and songwriter. He was the drummer for the influential punk rock band the Ramones for the first four years of the band's existence, and was the last surviving original member of the Ramones.

Tommy was born in Hungary, his Jewish parents were professional photographers, who survived the Holocaust by being hidden by neighbors. Many of his relatives were murdered by the Nazis. Tommy and his family fled to the U.S eventually settling in Forest Hills Queens in New York City.

After leaving school, at 18, Tommy started working as an assistant engineer at the Record Plant studio, where, he worked on the production of the 1970 Classic Jimi Hendrix album Band of Gypsys.
When the Ramones first came together, Tommy was the manager, with Joey on Drums, Johnny on Guitar and Dee Dee on Bass. Joey could not keep up with the increasingly fast tempos so Tommy was recruited as drummer.

"Tommy Ramone, who was managing us, finally had to sit down behind the drums, because nobody else wanted to," Dee Dee later recalled.

Tommy was the Ramones drummer from 1974-1978. He co-produced their first three albums, "Ramones", "Leave Home", and "Rocket to Russia".  His final show as a Ramones drummer was at Johnny Blitz benefit event at CBGB's in New York, USA on May 4, 1978

Tommy did not like the constant touring and being on the road and felt he would be more useful to the band in the studio and writing songs. Even after Tommy left as drummer, Tommy remained in band management, and production.

Tommy was the heart and soul of the band. Whether he was playing drums, producing, engineering, writing songs, playing guitar solos, corralling Dee Dee or breaking up fights between Joey and Johnny, Tommy was an intergral part of the Ramones success. One of the greatest and most influential bands of all time. Tommy passed away July 11, 2014 at the age of 65.

We remember and salute Tommy Ramone on his birthday! We Love and Miss You!
