Michael Hutchence

Happy Birthday

Michael Kelland John Hutchence
January 22, 1960
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

We remember Michael Hutchence today as a talented singer, songwriter and actor.

Hutchence was the lead singer of the hugely successful band INXS, from 1977 until his death in 1997. The band sold over 55 million records worldwide.

Hutchence exuded an overltly sexual cool. He was beautiful, with long curly locks and a Jim Morrison-esque brooding and posturing.

Initially known for their new wave/pop style, INXS later developed a harder pub rock style that included funk and dance elements.
In 1984, INXS scored their first number-one hit in Australia with "Original Sin". The band would later achieve international success in the mid-to-late 1980s and early 1990s with the hit albums Listen Like Thieves, Kick, and X, as well as the singles "What You Need", "Need You Tonight" (the band's first and only number-one single in the United States), "Devil Inside", "Never Tear Us Apart", and "Suicide Blonde".

Hutchence was described as "charismatic," with a "seductive purr and a magnetic stage presence. He had a phenomenal voice — moody, sexual, and dynamic, able to shift effortlessly from fragile to cocksure. One of the truly great frontmen — he expressed the music in a dynamic way that few others could.

On the morning of 22 November 1997, Hutchence was found dead in his hotel room in Sydney. His death was reported by the New South Wales Coroner to be the result of suicide. A tortured soul, he was only 37.

We remember and salute you on this day of your birth Michael Hutchence!
