Janis Joplin

Happy Birthday

Janis Lyn Joplin
January 19, 1943
Port Arthur, Texas

We remember Janis Joplin as one of the greatest voices of our generation, and of all time. "Pearl" was only with us for a short time but left a lasting legacy.

Janis only released 3 albums before her death in 1970. Janis was only 27 when she died of a heroin overdose. A fourth album, Pearl, was released in January 1971, just over three months after her death. It reached number one on the Billboard charts.

Janis first rose to fame after her appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. Janis was then lead singer of "Big Brother and the Holding Company".

After 2 albums Janis was a solo artist with the backing bands, "Kozmic Blues Band" and "Full Tilt Boogie Band".
As a performer, Janis was second to none. She gave it her all, she opened up her heart and bled all over that stage. She was the real deal and sang from the heart. At the end of a performance, you knew Janis gave you everything she had. She never phoned it in.

Janis gave us "Piece of My Heart", "Cry Baby", "Down on Me", "Ball and Chain", "Summertime", "Mercedes Benz" and the #1 single "Me and Bobby McGee".

Janis influenced every singer that came after her. An amazing voice and presence. Janis had soul and she had the blues. A sweet young girl that was only  in her 20's as she was one of the most successful, influential artists in the world.

Jolin's body of work is breath taking, prolific and genius. She was a shooting star, and the world is lucky to have had her.

Janis tragically died October 4, 1970, but her legend, music and influence will live on forever.

We remember and salute you on this day of your birth Janis Joplin!
