John Travolta Re-enacts ‘Saturday Night Fever’ Bridge Stunt! Snarls Traffic For Miles

Staten Island, N.Y – NYPD Emergency Service Units responded to a man walking on the lower level of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.  The call initially came over the police radio as “a suicidal male” walking on the Brooklyn-bound side of the span shortly after 5 p.m.

John Travolta

It turned out to be John Travolta re-enacting his iconic role as Tony Manero from the 1977 movie Saturday Night Fever. In the movie, Travolta and his Brooklyn buddies would clown around on the bridge and hang from the cables.

Bridge Stunt

During a weekend dinner, Travolta was accused by his good buddy Tom Cruise of not doing his own stunts. Travolta was adamant that he performed all the bridge stunts himself. John insisted that there were no stunt men, wires or special effects.

Cruise called Travolta out and made him a $100 bet that he couldn’t re-enact the stunt. Travolta took the bet. The entire family left Englewood NJ and drove to the Staten Island side of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

Saturday Night Fever

Travolta got out of the car and walked out onto the bridge. He then proceeded to hang from the cables just like in the movie. Reports say Travolta was even dancing and hanging upside down from the bridge. Witness Steven Bello stated, “Travolta is incredible, he was doing pull ups, standing on one leg and even recreated the entire dance scene from Saturday Night Fever. He is like 70 years old and he was doing that Russian dance on a bridge nonetheless. John is the man.”

The police closed down the entire lower level of the bridge, and helicopters and boats were brought in. Traffic was backed up for miles. When questioned by Police, Travolta said “Sorry for all the trouble and delays, but I did win $100!”
